A Scarce 1808 Edition of John Tinney's 'A Compendious Treatise of Anatomy' TINNEY, John (c.1706-1761) 'A Compendious Treatise of Anatomy adapted to the arts of designing, painting, and sculpture on ten folio copper plates in which the external muscles of the human body are represented at large'. Pub. LONDON: Printed for Robert Laurie and James Whittle, 1808. Collation: Title, 3 leaves :: 10 plates. It first appeared in 1743 and underwent 7 editions until 1842. Early copies exist in the University of Melbourne, Duke University and John Crerar Library Chicago. John Tinney was an engraver and print-seller in Fleet Street, London. He apprenticed under the engraver John Stuart and would later have apprentices of his own incl. William Woollet & Anthony Walker. Not being an anatomist himself, his prints draw heavily from Andreas Vesalius & William Cowper.
