Four Iterations of Early Texts
Lot comprises: MONDEVILLE, Henry de. Photographic reproduction of the anatomical section pages 1-75 of MS 632 in Wellcome Institute of the History of Medicine (Payne manuscript)
Payne JF An unpublished English anatomical treatise of the 14th Century. British Medical Journal 1896;1:200-3.
It is by an English surgeon, but based on a surgical text written in 1392 on the teaching of Henri de Mondeville. It is a XVth century transcript from the original (ca. 1475). It is upon this anatomical text that Thomas VICARY based his book. Payne 'pointed out that Vicary's anatomy was archaic, completely ignoring the work of Vesalius; moreover Vicary's text was transcribed from the manuscript, in some cases word for word, but in general was a condensation. The identity of the English surgeon who compiled the manuscripts, Cushing and other authors have stated that this manuscript, described by Payne, had been lost and is no longer available for study. This is not so, for the manuscript is in the Wellcome Historical Library (MS 632 Henri de Mondeville) with the rest of the Payne collection.' (Russell British Anatomy 837)
BROWNE, John. The anatomy of the eye with its muscles, coats, humours, glands and excretory vessells.

Muot?ia or the anatomicall discourse of all the muscles of the humane body as they appear in dissection collected, written, and drawne by John Browne, sworne Chirurgeon to the King. 1675.
Copy of Manuscript 129.b.22 RCS.
This is a photostat copy of the manuscript in the Library of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. The microfilm negative was sent to me by W.R. LeFanu, the Librarian. It would appear to be John Browne's original manuscript dated 6 years before the first printed edition of 1681. Original size is 23cm high (page size). Russell British Anatomy 99.
Plus in a separate volume a typescript of text of Manuscript 129.b.22 RCS.
'Manuscript in RCS (MS. 129.b.22) written on 76 leaves. Illustrations are present on 39 of the leaves. This manuscript is almost certainly in the hand of an amanuensis with corrections by Browne. The title and illustrations are exactly from Guilio Casserio's Tabulae anatomicae. the title in particular being copies from that of the 1632 Frankfurt edition. The text is copied from William Molins' or, the anatomical administration of all muscles of an humane body... London, 1648. The manuscript is undoubtedly a draft for the printed versio of 1681, the illustrations being redrawn for the printed version and the text slightly modified but the manuscript is important for showing the method of Browne's plagiarism.'
