HEISTER, Lorenz. Institutions de chirurgie, …..où L'on Traite dans un Ordre Clair et Nouveau de tout ce qui a Rapport a Cet Art... Traduit du Latin...par M. Paul. Pub. A AVIGNON; chez J.J. Niel Imprimeur-Libraire, rue de la Balance. MDCCLXX- MDCCLXXlll [1770-73] Four volumes complete. 'Heister surgical works were extremely popular being reprinted and translated into a number of languages many times. His illustrations in particular give a good picture of 18th century surgery. Editions appeared in German, Latin, English Spanish French, Italian, Japanese and Dutch. This is the first edition in French. Two separate issues appeared by the same printer in 1770. One was in 4to 2.vol. [16, xlii: 672, 5pp: 1 leaf, 639, 1pp :40 plates] the other was in 4 vols, 8ov with a later supplement (1773) as in my copy. It was not clear which came first. An exact and most partial account of the inditement as both may have appeared together for the plates have page references to both 4to and 8vo issues. The original German edition was published in Nürnberg: J. Hoffman, 1718. Chirurgie in welcher alles cods zuer Wund Artzney gehöret nach der neuester und besten Art.' (Russell) Original marbled full leather bindings have the corners worn, spine ends with losses. Text overall toned, not overt, generally clean and unhandled with a handful of sections of very darkly toned. Plates are on 2 types of paper, some toned, others quite fresh. These also show little use. Refer to images for samples. Signature 'Santoso'(?) to each title, bookplates for Edward Ford MD & Ex Libris Anatomica K.F. Russell. (200x128mm)
