Circa 1862 EDINBURGH UNIVERSITY Cartes de Visite Photo Album
Album containing carte-de-visite photographs of the professors of the medical school in the early 1860s together with photographs of fellow graduates of John WILLIAMS who graduated in MD Edin 1862.
Importantly, also included, a CDV of Joseph Lister, c.1870.
The professors are: John Goodsir 1814-1867 Anatomy; Sir David Brewster 1781-1867 Natural Philosophy; Sir Alexander Grant 1826-1884 Principal of the University; John Inglis (Lord Glencourse) 1810-1897 Lord Justice General Chancellor; Sir Douglas Maclagan 1812-1900 Medical Jurisprudence; Sir Robert Christison 1797-1882 Pharmacology; James Syme 1799-1876 Clinical Surgery; Thomas Laycock 1812-1876 Medicine; John Hughes Bennett 1812-1875 Physiology; Lyon Playfair (later Lord Playfair) 1818-1898 Chemistry; George James Allman 1812-1898 Natural History; Sir James Young Simpson 1811-1870 Obstetrics; James Miller 1812-1884 Surgery; John Hutton Balfour 1808-1884 Medicine & Botany; and William Henderson 1810-1872 Pathology.

Brass bound, double clasped, embossed leather album of gilt edged arched mounts. Oxidisation of brass and slight detachment of brass near spine. Mild toning and foxing of the mounts, while the photographs are generally good, a few having spots/marks. Later typed short list tipped onto flyleaf.
