Arcane Ephemera - Sydney Mint Assayer W.S. Jevons Autograph Lot consists of a W.S. Jevons signed payment receipt for his entry on George Boole in the 1876 Encyclopaedia Britanica. William Stanley Jevons (1835-1882) economist and logician arrived in Sydney in 1848 as a contract assayer at the Sydney Mint. Over the next 15 years he extended his interests to meteorology, photography, sociology and town planning and social economy. Returning to Britain in 1860 he finished his working life at University College London. His Britanica entry on Boole (now immortalised in 'Boolean search'), the eminent Irish Logician and philosopher appeared in the 9th edition. He was paid £2-12-6. Reasonable condition, a small chip and tear to the bottom edge. (10x22cm)
