A Boy's Adventures in the Wilds of Australia William Howitt, pub. Arthur Hall, Virtue & Co. London 1858. 247pp. + 12 engraved illustrations. Second edition, first 1855. William Howitt arrived in Melbourne in 1852 and spent 2 years travelling with his 2 sons. This appears to be the record of this time by son Herbert. He returned to Britain in 1854. Howett's 2 other brothers, Richard and Godfrey had significant involvement in early Melbourne. As an interesting footnote, later in the 1870s at Tra Fontane, Italy, he persuaded the Trappist Monks to plant malarial swamps with eucalyptus seeds from East Gippsland. Older rebinding in brown boards with some wear to the front hinge. Untidy owners names to rear of frontispiece 1898 to 1904. Content condition is mixed, occasional soiling and damage, pencil marks, one plate coloured in, foxing. (17x11cm)
