WWII Volunteer Defence Force 'D' Group Archive Lieut. Augustus Gibson Fairleigh, a WWI A.I.F. France veteran re-enlisted at age 50 in January 1942. He was put in charge of 'D' Group V.D.C. based in Goulburn. This lot comprises multiple hundreds of papers relating to his time with the V.D.C. from 1942 to 1946. It also appears that Fairleigh trained at Studleigh Park in 1941. This offering of a few hundred pieces includes; Much official training material in warcraft, intelligence, map reading (about 10 maps with practice Exercises marked) equipment etc. Many pieces of handwritten training notes, reports/reviews on local V.D.C.s from Cootamundra, Braidwood, and down the coast to Central Tilba and beyond. Numerous casual and official handwritten correspondences and diaries (diaries are terse, appointment style), also 'aide memiore' style notes on procedures/requirements/rules. Narrative notes on Exercises - one relating to an enemy Coy. capturing Captains Flat & moving on to "Queanbeyan as a base from which to operate against Canberra, and Airfields." "The enemy are known to be vigorous and enterprising and have landed a limited amount of AFV's and Arty but as yet no reports have been received to indicate any use being made of those weapons except in coastal areas." etc. ( includes map with deployment lines.) Also an Exercise notes on an enemy attack on Williamstown (Vic) and others. Adjacent ephemera such as paybooks, I.D. cards, autographed dinner menus, payment receipts and more. A significant slice of wartime V.D.C. Condition is typical of loose paperwork, tears, staining and light soiling ranging from shabby to good, refer to images. (34x22cm- mostly foolscap)
