OTHER NOTES: According to the accompanying documentation this painting was collected at Yirrkala in 1958. The documentation reads in part: 'Mawalan the leader of the Riratjingu (sic) tribe has painted a bushland event the hunt for wild buffalo. These animals were introduced to the mainland by the earliest English settlers in 1824 and when they left their garrisons some four years later riddled with malaria and their numbers decimated by spear attacks they let the domesticated buffaloes of south east Asia run wild. The buffaloes wandered from their original landing place on the Coburg Peninsula and are now entrenched in the vastness of the Australian bush although an eradication program is now in progress because of the alleged harming of the ecology by these animals'.
