Essays and Leaves from a Notebook. George Eliot. Pub. William Blackwood & Sons, London 1884. First edition. A significant work in the Eliot canon, this collection of her essays and previously unpublished jottings from her notebook were posthumously edited by her step son Charles Lee Lewes under the aegis of John Cross her last (and only legal) husband of 3. Majority of the Essays were published in the Westminster review (where she was the assistant editor) under the name of Marian Evans. These are critical 'think pieces' which display her beyond average intellect. Uncommon. Black ruled brown cloth boards are aged and bumped, spine extremities a little raggy. Split to internal front hinge. Text block dusted to top, contents mildly toned but clean and straight, binding good. (20x14cm)
