The image depicts the ruins of St Martin's Cathedral in Ypres, Belgium, during WWI. Nugent Welch was appointed official war artist by Sir Andrew Russell. Prior to this he was a sniper with the 2nd Battalion, NZ, rifle brigade, serving as sergeant.
