Provenance: Christie's Australia Sept 1985, lot 539; Deutscher Menzies Apr 1999 lot 71 (where attributed to this artist). The work is similar to the portrait in the Newcastle Region Art Gallery of another industrialist of the period, John Portus (1799-1860). The subject of this work resembles contemporary photographs of John Booth of John Booth & Co Timber Merchants, Summer Hill & Johnstons Bay, Balmain (perhaps the backdrop for this work).
