Brief collation, Portrait, frontispiece, title, [4] leaves, 266pp. [6] leaves, title (new Atlantis) [1] leaf, 47pp., [1] leaf. Deals with all aspects of nature and knowledge. Despite its rambling structure unlike most of Bacon's work, it was the most popular of his books. Published posthumously by William Rawley, Bacon's chaplain. The original leather covered boards with later spine and corners are aged, marked and worn. Text block rippled, pages toned but almost free of foxing. Portrait and engraved frontispiece are soiled, water stained with losses to the top and older paper tape reinforcing to the portrait foredge. Title page also with losses to the top margin. Free endpaper has lengthy ink m/s to both sides and with signature of 'Jacobus Mauclere D.M. emit Groningae aõ 1688 pro 9....' (275x170mm)
