CHESELDEN, William. The Anatomy of the Human Body. The VIII Edition. Pub. LONDON: Printed for H. Woodfall, R. & J. Dodsley, R. Baldwin, W. Johnston, J, Richardson. S. Crawder & Co. and Hawes, Clarke & Collins. 1763. Collation brief, Frontispiece, title, pp i-[vi], 334pp, [8] leaves :: 40 plates. 'That Cheselden's Anatomy was a popular book is clearly shown by the number of editions that were published and it is of interest to note the number of printers who had a hand in its production. The most significant change occurred with the issue of the VIIth edition in 1750 printed for Hitch and Dodsley. It will be noted that this and all subsequent issues have the same standard collation; they were, in fact, all re-issues of the same text, with the same illustrations. On 8 April 1749 Cheselden sold copyright of his Anatomy to Charles Hitch and Robert Dodsley for the sum of £200 and the original deed of sale is in the Royal College of Surgeons [RCS MS Box 3 (33)]; attached to this deed are two receipts for the subsequent sale of shares in the copyright. On 19 October 1771, W. Woodfall paid £6. 6s. to Me Dodsley for a one- sixteenth share. Later, on 25 November 1778, James Dodsley paid £4. 7s. to the estate of the late William Nicoll for a one-sixteenth; this he had obtained at an auction at the Globe Tavern on 22 October of the same year. The price paid by James Dodsley would indicate a waning popularity in the book, which is not surprising as many thousands of copies must have been printed. After 1792 further editions appeared in America and it was translated into German. (Russell, British Anatomy 164.) Later binding in quarter calf on marbled boards in good condition. Contents toned with soiling to the title page, occasional marks throughout. Worm holes to very corner of bottom RH pages, water staining to top LH corner of first 180 pages. Loss and repair to plate XIX. Bookplate: Ex Libris Anatomica K.F. Russell. Overall fair to good for age. Refer to images. (202x126mm)
