3 Instructional Volumes on the Subject of Anatomy: Edward Stanley (1822), William Pinnock (1825) & Sir William Lawrence (1838)
1) STANLEY, Edward (1791-1862) 'Manual of Practical Anatomy, for the use of students engaged in dissections' Pub. LONDON: printed for John Anderson... 1822. Second edition. Collation: Title, pp [v]-xxiii, 430pp.
Stanley was one of the original fellows of the Royal College of Surgeons to St Bartholomew's Hospital where he was noted as a clinical teacher. He was appointed 'Surgeon Extraordinary' to the Queen in 1858 and President of the RCS in 1848 and 1857. Stanley's great strength lay in his teaching ability. The first edition of his manual was in 1818.
Quarter leather and worn marbled boards, spine cracked, much shelf wear, small sketches to end paper, James H Stowers, tanning and foxing.
Bookplates: Ex Libris Anatomica KF Russell. Signatures: Arthur B Evans and note 'To James H Stewer' (176x101mm)
2) PINNOCK, William (1782-1843) 'A Catechism of Anatomy: for the instruction of youth in the first principles of that science' Pub. LONDON: Printed for Geo B Whittaker... 1825. Collation: Portrait (J Hunter), Engr title, title, 71pp :: 2 plates.
Pinnock was a publisher and educational writer. Came to London from Hampshire where he was a schoolmaster in 1817 and commenced a series of manuals of popular instruction which met with extraordinary success. Although very many copies must have been printed, this is the only one I have ever seen.
Very delicate printed paper cover in protective cover (stitched in printed boards as issued), some wear, internally good, minor foxing tanning.
Bookplate Ex Libris Anatomica KF Russell loosely pasted inside (140x86mm)
3) LAWRENCE, Sir William (1783-1867) 'Lectures on Comparative Anatomy, Physiology, Zoology and the Nature of Man' Pub. LONDON: John Taylor... 1838. Collation: Frontispiece, title, pp[iii]-iv, 396pp :: 12 plates.
This is a much expanded version of Lawrence's lectures published in 1816. Lawrence was President of the Royal College of Surgeons, made 'Serjeant-Surgeon' to Queen Victoria in 1858 and created a Baronet in 1867. His lectures were controversial for espousing that a literal translation of Genesis is inconsistent with biological fact, marking a shift toward modern anthropology and away from scripture.
Blue Buckram with gold embossed title to spine, flecking, shelf wear, 'Chivers Patent Binding' yellow endpapers minor tanning and foxing.
Bookplate: Ex Libris Anatomica KF Russell, Bradford Public Library Stamp in several places and Withdrawn Stamp (176x105mm)
