Cathcart was Assistant Surgeon at the Royal Infirmary and Lecturer on Anatomy at Surgeon's Hall Edinburgh. Caird was Senior Assistant of the Surgical Department at the University of Edinburgh.

Scarce first (and only) edition of an illustrated collection of medical case studies. A third volume was published in 1896.
