Also a loosely inserted frontispiece (loss to top LH) with pasted over cartouche 'The anatomy of Humane Bodies, by Willm. Cowper Surgeon 1698.' Likely excised from Cowper's plagiarised publication. Plus, folded full leaf with copies of plates 16 & 28 drawn in ink. Legends in English. A landmark work in medical history. Govard Bidloo (1649-1713) began this project with de Lairesse around 1676 while writing plays in Amsterdam, studying for his medical degree, and working as a surgeon. The artist Gérard de Lairesse (1641-1711) was inspired by Rembrandt. The figures are displayed realistically, with dissections contrasted against natural flesh, and an occasional book, inkwell or other object appearing in the compositions. Original boards, poor condition, incorporated into later rebinding with newer spine and corners. Text block dusted to the top edge. Contents have mild toning, foxing spots, damp stains, offsetting, and rare finger soiling. Noted 2 pages with short edge tears. The two folding plates have repaired tears. Overall this work presents well for age. Refer to images which give a fair indication of condition. Previous owners inscription to flyleaf, Antonio Francesco Bertini (1658-1726) Professor of Medicine at Ospitale St. Maria Nuova, Florance. Also Library of Eugen Alexander Polya (1876-1944) purchased by Russell from his daughter. Bookplate: Ex Libris Anatomica KF Russell. (524x365mm)
