Cadell bookseller, successor to Mr Millar, in the Strand 1769, rebound, 76pp. Brisbane was a Scottish physician, who became physician at the Middlesex Hospital from 1758 until 1773. 'Anatomical Studies of the Bones and Muscles, for the Use of Artists, from the drawings by the late John Flaxman, ESQ R.A.(1755-1826) engraved by Henry Landseer (1802-1873); with two additional Plates; and explanatory Notes, by William Robertson'. Pub. LONDON: M.A. Nattali, 24 Tavistock Street Covent Garden 1833, printer: Marchant, Ingram Court, Fenchurch Street, 13pp plus 22 plates including Flaxman portrait. Jon Flaxman left 19 anatomical drawings unpublished at his death. They were later engraved by Henry Landseer for William Robertson's compilation, which included two of Robertsons own plates. Jon Flaxman was a prestigious English Neo-classical sculptor and was appointed the Royal Academy of Art's first Professor of Sculpture in 1810. Henry Landseer performed dissections to understand the human form and was a gifted engraver and artist in his own right, mainly known for his sculptures and paintings of animals. He exhibited his works at the Royal Academy and was elected as Academician in 1831. Blue buckram folio with typed label to cover, some shelf wear with large chips to spine, some tanning and foxing.
