Sir James Frederick Palmer (1804-1871) was a great-nephew of the artist Sir Joshua Reynolds, was a surgeon of London who came to Australia in 1839 and became the first mayor of Melbourne and later President of the Legislative Assembly. John Hunter (1728-1793) was a Senior Surgeon to the St George's and St James's Dispensary, Fellow of the Royal Medical and Chirurgical Society of London. There are several issues of the text volumes with varying dates, some are dated 1835, others with 1835 and 1837 on same volumes, others like this set with 1837 on all. 'Plate volume always dated 1837. Vol 1-4: half calf with marbled boards and gold embossed spine, some shelf wear, minor tanning and foxing, profile portrait of John Hunter frontispiece. Given to KFR by Sir William George Dismore Upjohn (1888-1979), renowned Australian Surgeon and Founding Member of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, with his signatures and a note that the text volumes came from the library of Sir Harry Brookes Allen (1854-1926), Professor of Pathology and Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Melbourne.
