'Certaine Works of Chirurgerie, newlie Compiled and Published by Thomas Gale, Master in Chirurgerie' Bound in with 'Certaine Works of Galins called Methodus Medendi with a briefe Declaration of the worthie Art of Medicine, the Office of a Chirurgion, and an Epitome of the third booke of Galen, of Natural Faculties: all translated into English by Thomas Gale. Both pub. LONDON: Printed by Thomas East dwelling between Paules Wharfe and Bainards Castle, 1586. Thomas Gale, a Tudor surgeon, saw much war service in the army of Henry VIII. He was Sergent Surgeon to Elizabeth I. His book, often cited as the first surgical work written in English, is noted for its emphases on his own experience and practice. First published in 1563 this is the second edition. Note: Please see image of Russell's pencilled note to flyleaf regarding the collation; volume A lacks p.5-6, volume B (Gallens) lacks pages 121-138 (to finish). Also it's portrait frontispiece. Rebound by Zaehnsdorf in half calf on marbled boards. Text is generally toned to the edges, a few very minor losses to the bottom RH corner tips, occasional spots and marks and also waterstaining ingress from page edges.
