Original Report - 1857 Wreck of the Catherine Adamson Printed by the Government Printer, 1857, for distribution to the Legislative Assembly of NSW. 32pp. Just 9 weeks after the Dunbar went down the 880 ton cargo and passenger ship Catherine Adamson lost her masts just inside North Head during a violent storm. Dropping anchor, it swung around into rocks, smashed and sank. Out of the 34 crew members, 17 lost their lives, while 4 of the 8 passengers survived. All bodies were buried in a mass grave (previously prepared for Dunbar bodies) at St. Stephens Church Newtown. Report and conclusions take the first 2 pages, the remainder is a verbatim record of the enquiry, first witness a passenger, Rev. B.E. Shaw, then Harbour Pilot, First Officer of the Adamson etc. Original official stitched, blue untrimmed paper darkened to the edges, otherwise good condition for age. (35x22cm)
