LINDSAY, Norman (1879-1969) 'Called Up,' 1944. 'Miss Liberty, you are in a non-essential occupation. You are directed to report again after R-Day for service in Bourke or a pickle-factory.' The subject of this cartoon depicting then prime-minister John Curtin was the defeat of the '14 powers' or '14 points referendum,' & proposal to extend wartime controls over (amongst other things) the nationalisation of employment for an additional five years. The referendum's defeat constituted the first conservative success in such a contest in many years. Ex Christopher Day Gallery (label verso). Ink & Wash 53x33.5cm Estimate $2,000-3,000
