REMMELIN, Johann. Catoptrum Microcosmicum…. …suis aere Incisis Visionibus Splendens cum Historia and Pinace, de nono prodit. Pub. ULMAE Sueorum: sumptibus Iohannis Gorlini M.DC. XXXIX [1639] Engraved title, pp 3-34, i leaf :: 3 full page plates with many superimposed flaps. In this copy the Latin title is pasted over the German title in oval section. First authorized edition, preceded by a 1613 version published without Remmelin's approval. "This is the first anatomical atlas to make extensive use of the flap method to depict the structure of the body. . . . The accompanying Latin text was a mixture of anatomy, physiology, and theology. It was not a good source for anatomical instruction and clearly was intended for lay persons interested in better understanding the human body. Nonetheless, Remmelin's work was very well received and later translated into German, French, Dutch, and English"--Heirs of Hippocrates 456. Choulant-Frank, pages 232-34. Older rebinding in narrow quarter calf on flecked boards is worn and bumped. Title label with rubbing and losses. Engraved title has been trimmed and rebacked, small losses in the original plate to RH edge, and closed tear on pasted title cartouche. Three pages have their foredges reinforced with older paper tape. Some marks and toning, a little soiling to the edges. Paper flaps mostly good, some small parts such as fingers creased and folded over. Russell claims in his notes that all are present. Bookplate: Ex Libris Anatomica K.F. Russell. (432x325mm)
