5 Volume French Set on Anatomy: 4 Volumes of 'Anatomie Generale' by Marie Francois Xavier BICHAT 1801 with a Supplementary 'Additions' by Pierre Augustin BECLARD from 1821. 1) BICHAT, Marie Francois Xavier 'Anatomie Generale, applique a la physiologie et a la medicine' in 4 volumes. Pub. PARIS: Chez Brosson, Gabon et Cie, 1801. Collation: Vol 1 Half title, title, pp[v]-cxii, 244pp :: 2 folding tables Vol 2 Half title, title, pp 245-636. Vol 3 Title pp[v]-xxxvii, 414pp. Vol 4, Half title, title, pp 415-828. This is a remarkable and outstanding text which must remain a classic for all time. It is most unusual to find the volume of Additions with the original edition in the four volumes. Bichat was professor of anatomy at Paris and physician to Hotel Dieu. He pioneered the study of tissues as distinct from organs. He died from a fall down the stairs. Quarter leather with tips lacking and repaired boards, faded marbled boards. All similar condition with foxing and tanning, loose spines and shelf wear, vol 1 front pages loose, vol 3 cover unattached, 'Henry Oldknow' script to front of each. Bound uniformly with Additions by Beclard as vol 5. All Ex Libris Anatomica KF Russell Bookplates (200x125mm) 2) 'BECLARD, Pierre Augustin (1785-1825) 'Additions a l'Anatomie Generale de Xav Bichat pour servir de complement aux editions en quatre volumes' (Additions to Xavier Bichat's General Anatomy, vol 5 serving as a supplement to the four-volume editions). Pub. PARIS: Chez JA Brossen, 1821. Collation: Portrait, title pp[v]-xvi, 352pp. Most unusual to find this with Bichat and V5 on spine. Beclard was a renowned professor of Anatomy in Paris, studying the tissue through autopsy and physiological experimentation. He died young of typhoid, likely contracted during a dissection. Quarter leather binding, lacking cover tips, marbled boards repaired, loose spine cover. Bookplates: Ex Libris Anatomica KF Russell (200x175mm)
