The plates are from Antonio Scarpa (1747-1832)'Tabulae neurologica (the 23 of the nerves) and seven supplementary plates of the brain from those of Felix Vicq d'Azyr (1748-1794) and those of Franz Joseph Gall (1757-1828) and Johann Casper Spurzheim (1776-1832).
Knox was assistant to John Barclay (1758-1926) in his private school of anatomy in Edinburgh. On Barclay's death he took over the school. He was involved in the Burke and Hare murders, for the bodies came to his school.
Half brown Morocco bindings with gold embossed title and flourishes to spine, marbled endpapers. All in similar condition with heavy foxing and tanning, shelf wear and marks.
