Matthew Baillie's 1803 Edition of 'Morbid Anatomy' BAILLIE, Matthew (1761-1823) 'A Series of Engravings Accompanied with Explanations which are Intended to Illustrate the Morbid Anatomy of Some of the Most Important Parts of the Human Body' Pub. LONDON: printed by W Bulmer... 1803. Collation: Half-title, title, 1 leaf, 228pp, 4 leaves (index) :: 73 plates. The plates are drawn by William Clift (1775-1849). The original drawings for these plates are shared between the Medical Library of the University of Melbourne (which has Clift's own copy of the book) and the RCP, London. Plate VI of Fasciculus 2 shows a section of the lung of Samuel Johnson (1709-1784) the great lexicographer. The work was issued in ten fascicules from 1799-1803. Some copies have 1799 on the title, but most have the title issued in 1803. Baillie was John Hunter's nephew.
