Russell's career began with his graduation in medicine in 1935 at the University of Melbourne. Being diverted to the war effort, he later continued his practise as Associate Professor in the Department of Anatomy at Melbourne University for 20 years. He was the only medical graduate of the University at the time to be awarded a degree of Doctor of Letters and then Personal Chair in Anatomy and Medical History. After a long and distinguished career, Russell gives his name to the Kenneth Fitzpatrick Russell Memorial Lecture, founded posthumously.
