'This, the first edition, is undated. The accompanying octavo text in 12 parts is dated 1822-26. In many catalogues the plates are dated 1823 or 1825. Theoretically a complete set of plates should be dated the same as the last part issued. However, the second edition of the plates (1826) had the text printed in the same size as the plates and issued together. The plates are engraved by William H Lizars (1788-1859), John's brother who took over the publishing business funded by his father after he died in 1812.'
