Joshua BROOKES Natural History Museum - Initial Sale Prodromus, 1828. This is a preliminary notice of the sale of Joshua Brookes's notable private museum. '….Catalogue Raisonne of the Zootomical Collection of Joshua Brookes Esq. F.R.S. etc. Part of the First and of the Anatomical Preparations, Part of the Second Which will be Sold By Auction, about the Middle of May, unless Previously Purchased by Private Contract, including the Large and Interesting Department of Natural History, etc. etc.' Pub. LONDON: Printed by Gold and Walton, 24 Wardour Street, Soho, 1828. Title [1] leaf, pp [5]-20. Very similar to the Catalogue (1827) held at the British College of Surgeons but with edited and added material due to Brookes adopting William MacLeay's Quinary System in the interim, including a Venn-esque diagram on page 19. Elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1819, Brookes (1761-1833) gave up teaching in 1826, in bad health. After vainly endeavouring to dispose of his museum collection entire, he sold it off piecemeal. The final sale took place on 1 March 1830, and on 22 following days. Stab stitched pamphlet has a soiled front and back, page edges dog eared and chipped. Contents fairly clean, binding holding. Refer to images. Rare in this iteration. (255x166mm)
