Collation: Vol 1 Portrait (of John Hunter), title, pp[iii]-xvi, [1] leaf, 403pp. Vol 2 Title, pp[iii]-xii, 507pp. John Hunter's essays are taken from the manuscript copies made by William Clift FRS (Conservator of the Museum of the Royal College of Surgeons). They are published here for the first time with notes by Owen, who was Superintendent of the Natural History Departments, British Museum and Clift's son-in- law. Much of Hunter's manuscripts were destroyed by his brother-in-law, Everard Home. It is suggested that this was done to possibly disguise plagiarism by Home, although this is unproven. Brown buckram with gold embossed title to spine, cover a little loose, minor flecking and shelf wear, minor foxing with tanning, marks to endpapers. Cover a little loose to vol 1.
