'Winchester' Biography: Born 1826: Died 18 August 1883 M.R.C.S. (1846) F.R.C.S. Acting Assistant Surgeon 4 June 1847: Staff Surgeon 25 February 1853: Fleet Surgeon 19 August 1870. Acting Assistant Surgeon H.M.S. 'Cyclops' 21 February 1850: Assistant Surgeon H.M.S. 'Winchester' (50) under Captain Granville Gower Loch C.B. in Burma War 1852-53. Served on barge 'Winchester' on 2 November 1852 at reconnaissance at Prome; and at Storming of heights of Akouton on 4 November and attack at Upper Prome on 9 November. Surgeon to H.M.S. 'Harrier' (screw steamer), served on S-E coast America, and on Australian stations, where he transferred to H.M.S. 'Miranda' (steam corvette) where her served in Naval Bde landed against the rebels on the Warhi river (New Zealand) 1863-64. Appointed to 'Boscawen' training ship 1 January 1867. Fleet Surgeon H.M.S. 'Trincomalee' 1877 and H.M.S. 'Resistance' 1879. After the battle of Gate Pah in the New Zealand War Slade, together with Surgeon Movat, V.C., signed the nominal roll of dead and wounded. Service: Burma (Pegu); New Zealand 1863-64.
