First China War Medal 1840-42 Awarded to John Willam Bowler, Surgeon, H.M.S. Hazard. Issued to those who had taken part in the capture of the island of Chusan, in Hangchow Bay, on 5 July 1840 and the operations in the Canton River, during 1841. The campaign ended with the capture of Nanking. Biography: 1803-1864 Surgeon R.N. Died 16 November 1864. Seniority as Surgeon R.N. 8 November 1837: Appointed Surgeon H.M.S. 'Hazard' (sloop 18 guns) 6 October 1841. Surgeon H.M.S. 'Alarm' (26) 11 October 1845. Surgeon Superintendent of the Portsea Convict Prison. Officers of the Prison paced a medieval marble cross on his grave in Haslar Cemetery. Service: China 1842 (H.M.S. 'Hazard')
