This is cut from the catalogue of the W J Long sale at Christies, 28th June 1890, where this work was lot 117, and sold as a work by Romney. W J Long was a descendant of Romney's friend, the surgeon William Long. This work was purchased by the art dealer Charles Davis for 65 pounds, 2 shillings. Some of the attributions to Romney in this catalogue have been challenged by scholars and art historians. Possible faint signature ('Romney') lower left.
