LINDSAY, Norman (1879-1969)

Not signed, but certified verso by Douglas Stewart, husband to Margaret Coen, and then representative of the Norman Lindsay Gallery and Museum, Springwood.
In one sense a classic Lindsay nude, this work has an additional personal element stemming from the close connection maintained over many years between the artist and Stewart household. Margaret Coen was both a student and model of Norman Lindsay; and Douglas Stewart, her husband, collaborated with Lindsay as illustrator of his own published books of poetry. In 1975, Stewart published 'Norman Lindsay, A Personal Memoir,' detailing this long history. Not simply a 'Lindsay nude', the work is also a portrait of friend and fellow artist, Margaret Coen.
