LINDSAY, Norman (1879-1969) Portrait of Margaret Coen, c.1940. Not signed, but certified verso by Douglas Stewart, husband to Margaret Coen, and then representative of the Norman Lindsay Gallery and Museum, Springwood. In one sense a classic Lindsay nude, this work has an additional personal element stemming from the close connection maintained over many years between the artist and Stewart household. Margaret Coen was both a student and model of Norman Lindsay; and Douglas Stewart, her husband, collaborated with Lindsay as illustrator of his own published books of poetry. In 1975, Stewart published 'Norman Lindsay, A Personal Memoir,' detailing this long history. Not simply a 'Lindsay nude', the work is also a portrait of friend and fellow artist, Margaret Coen. Oil on Canvas 40x33.5cm
